Car Show Benefiting Purple Heart Foundation Set For Saturday

A selection of antique autos will be on display this weekend at VFW Post 5352 as part of a fundraiser for the Northwest Piedmont Purple Heart Foundation.

As in recent years, the Old Salem Chapter of the Antique Automobile Club of America is hosting the car, truck, and motorcycle show, which will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Saturday.

Mary Powers, the event’s chairperson, told Scope News that raising money is only part of the goal.

She said organizers hope to bring awareness to the significance of the military decoration as well as the dozens of recipients currently living in our community.

“Purple Hearts are for people who have severely been wounded and continue to help others while they’re there,” she said. “And what it does is we have a benefit to honor the ones who have gotten it, the ones in our area. We have over 100 Purple Heart recipients in our area.”

The oldest, Powers said, is more than 101 years old.

In addition to the car show, which will raise money through entry donations and $1 votes from attendees, the event will also feature raffles, a silent auction, and baked goods for sale.

“Any money we collect there goes to the Purple Heart Foundation,” Powers explained.

Music, food, a VFW Honor Guard display, and an appearance by Mayor Dawn Morgan are also scheduled for the event.

Proceeds will help offset the cost of an honorary dinner to be held at Richard Childress Racing Campus in Welcome on August 17.
