Online retailers and big-box stores have increasingly put small businesses at a disadvantage in recent years, but two area entities are joining forces this weekend to promote local shopping and entertainment.
Belews Creek Farmer & Vendor Market, which typically hosts events at Eaton Farms just north of Kernersville, will be presenting a “Movie & Shop” event at Trex Cinema on Saturday from 3:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Event organizer Amanda Parham Shelton spoke to Scope News about what she hopes to accomplish by providing the opportunity to support local vendors and Kernersville’s only cinema.
“This idea to partner with Trex came from our hope for people to bring their family and friends to see a movie at their local theater, spread the word that the theater is open and has new movies, shop local businesses, and enjoy time out in the community more often,” she said.
Entry to the market will be free and a variety of craft vendors are expected as well as locally sourced meat from Windmill Acres Farm, drinks and donuts from Upswing Coffee, shaved ice and cotton candy from Firehouse Sweet Treats, and a face-painting booth. Shoppers are encouraged to bring cash.
Movies will be showing as scheduled throughout the event and later. Ticket prices and a full list of films playing this week are available on Trex Cinema’s website.
“Without small business there is no business,” Shelton added. “Without getting together with our community, there is no community. We cannot say we miss the old days if we won’t support the old ways. Small farms and small businesses, like Trex Cinema, are the backbone of our society. Events like these remind us who we are, whose we are, and where we come from.”
She noted that shoppers can do more to help the community than simply support local vendors.
“We collect non-perishable food items as well as monetary donations for Project Re:3, which is located at 3801 Old Hollow Road in Kernersville,” she said. “They hold a food pantry and clothes closet weekly for those in need. We hope our customers will bring some canned food to donate with them on Aug. 24.”
Trex Cinema is located off of North Main Street at 755 Cinema Court, the former location of Countryside Cinema.
