Free Child Car Seat Check Event Planned For Saturday

Research suggests more than half of all child car seats are improperly installed, and local officials are hosting a free event this weekend to help parents ensure their young ones stay safe while on the road.

The Kernersville Fire Rescue Department and Kernersville Police Department will be joined by Safe Kids Northwest Piedmont in the parking lot of Target, 1090 South Main Street, from 9:00 a.m. to noon on Saturday.

In addition to free access to certified technicians who will offer car seat inspections and information about proper installation, free pizza provided by KPD will be served beginning at 10:00 a.m.

“Whether you’re a new parent or just want to double-check your setup, this event is for you,” KFRD said in a statement announcing the event.

The agency cited statistics showing that properly installed car seats can reduce the risk of death in a car crash by 71% for infants and 54% for toddlers.

“Car seats should be replaced after any moderate-to-severe crash and it’s always important to check for expiration dates and recalls,” the statement concluded.
