Bishop McGuinness Takes Down Carver In Rescheduled Game

Tempers flared in Bishop McGuinness’ penalty-ridden 14-6 win over Carver High School Monday night.

Rescheduled from Friday night, the Villains started the game hot on both sides of the ball. Nicholas Graves caught a 76-yard touchdown pass from Alex Waterfield on their first offensive possession.

Just a few plays later, Nicholas’ twin brother Patrick Graves snagged an interception with 5:19 to go in the first quarter.

The Villains drive ended in a 4th & 25 punt, but Carver was called for roughing the kicker, one of many flags already thrown against both teams and certainly not the last. The Yellowjackets coaches and players became visibly upset at both the referees and each other.

Looking to capitalize on Carver’s frustration, the Villains marched down the field with their new set of downs, only to fumble into the end zone. Carver recovered and started the second quarter with an explosive 70+ yard reception, but a blocking in the back penalty brought it back.

Nicholas Graves, pulling double duty as wide receiver and defensive back, caught an interception and returned it for his second touchdown of the night. The Villains missed another two-point conversion, making it 12-0.

Flags riddled Carver’s next possession leaving the Yellowjackets deep in their own territory. A bad snap resulted in a safety. Bishop McGuinness increased its lead to 14-0.

Carver returned a punt for a touchdown right before halftime, but yet another penalty brought the ball back. The team’s reaction earned an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.

Carver scored in the third quarter with a quick two-reception drive, but could not convert the two-point attempt to trail Bishop McGuinness 14-6.

The Yellowjackets had one more chance with 55 seconds left in the game. On their fourth down with only one yard to go, the Villains defense thwarted Carver’s rush just enough to cause a turnover on downs.

“The officiating was terrible!” yelled one of Carver’s coaches as the teams shook hands after the game.

Bishop McGuinness is now 4-1 on the year and 1-1 in conference play. The Villains face Corvian Community High School Friday.
