Local Church To Host First ‘Blessing Of The Fire Trucks’ Ceremony

A tradition that has sprouted up in other communities across the U.S. is coming to Kernersville this weekend.

According to St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church Rev. Bob Cook, the “Blessing of the Fire Truck” event will begin on Sunday at 11:00 a.m. at the church, located at 1110 Salisbury Street, with a meal to follow.

“We’re thrilled to introduce this meaningful event to our community,” he said. “It’s a wonderful opportunity to honor our local firefighters and celebrate their invaluable contributions.”

Cook will officiate the brief blessing of the fire trucks and the men and women who serve on them. Participants will receive a special medal depicting Saint Floridan, the patron saint of first responders.

Similar blessings date back more than half a century to a ceremony in Keyport, New Jersey, that is still going strong today. St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church intends for Sunday’s event to be the first in what will become an annual local tradition.
