Local Authorities Warn Of Increased Camera Hacking Scams

The Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office recently issued an advisory regarding a fraudulent scheme that has become more common in the area.

Victims of so-called camera hacking scams typically receive a fraudulent warning that their home’s security camera system had been hacked. That is usually followed by a demand for payment in exchange for not releasing potentially sensitive information.

Authorities stressed that reputable companies would never make any such demand, so anyone who receives such an alert should not pay. Instead, those who believe they might be the target of scammers should check their accounts or contact their security camera service’s customer support department to determine if there has been a security breach.

Implementing additional security measures, such as two-factor authentication, can provide another layer of protection against hackers.

Anyone who receives a suspicious alert about a hacked security camera is encouraged to report it to local police and the Federal Trade Commission.
