On paper, a No. 30 seed with a 4-6 regular season record should be easy work for the undefeated No. 3 seed Eagles, but Friday night proved tougher than expected.
East Forsyth survived Butler High School with a final score of 38-35.
Both teams brought the fight in the first half. After receiving the opening kickoff, Butler scored on the second play of the game. East Forsyth’s Bryce Baker quickly countered with a touchdown thrown to J.P. Gilchrist.
Later in the first quarter, defensive tackle Chris Kirby made two big plays recovering a fumble and catching an interception, both of which led to Eagle touchdowns by Corey Blair and Jaylin Murry, respectively.
East Forsyth led 27-21 at halftime.
A penalty-ridden third quarter slowed the momentum of the game. Long possessions by both teams were fruitless except for a nine-yard rushing touchdown by Murry, his third of the night.
Butler kicked into high gear in the fourth quarter scoring a touchdown, recovering an onside kick, and holding the Eagles to just a field goal.
On the last drive of the game, Butler bulldozed the Eagles’ defense and scored as time expired, bringing the final to 38-35.
Despite their win, head coach Todd Willert advised the team in a heated post-game huddle: “The way we just ended the game was straight embarrassing. You play like this next week, you will get smoked.“
A conference rematch against No. 14 seed West Forsyth, whom the Eagles barely beat two weeks ago, awaits them Friday at home.
