Town Hall was packed with supporters on Friday as Dana Caudill Jones assumed the office vacated by recently retired Republican state Sen. Joyce Krawiec.
Jones, who won the recent election to succeed Krawiec, was subsequently chosen to complete the remainder of the current term. Mayor Dawn Morgan explained the unusual situation just prior to the swearing-in ceremony.
“She’ll be sworn in soon, in January, to serve in the 2025 term in the North Carolina Senate,” Morgan said of Jones. “But today it’s a celebration and swearing-in for really a second election that happened this past Friday, where she was selected to serve out the remainder of Joyce Krawiec’s term since Joyce … retired a few days ago from the North Carolina Senate and [Jones] was voted on and selected by acclamation to serve out the remainder of Joyce’s term, so a few days until we get to the beginning of the 2025 term. So today, she’s actually going to be sworn into the 2023 Senate.”
After completing her oath of office, Jones thanked supporters and pledged to provide a voice for this community upon arriving in Raleigh.
“I promise I am going in for December to fill some really big shoes for always my favorite senator,” she said. “And so I will tell you I will do that in December and I will continue to do that in January when I start the term we voted on in November.”
Jones, whose political experience includes terms on the Kernersville Board of Alderman and Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Board of Education, went on make another promise: “I will carry with me my common sense, I will carry with me my values, and most importantly, I will carry with me my faith.”
