Körner’s Folly Kicks Off New Series With Dialogue On Local Black History

A new “Taste of History” program will debut downtown this weekend with a discussion honoring Kernersville’s Black history.

Author JoAnne Falls and Alderman J.R. Gorham will engage in a conversation from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in the John & Bobbie Wolfe Visitors Center, located next door to Korner’s Folly at 401 South Main Street.

“With her work as a researcher and author of ‘Kernersville Black Retrospective,’ hearing Mrs. Falls speak on her findings will no doubt be illuminating for us all,” Korner’s Folly Foundation Executive Director Suzanna Malliett told Scope News. “[And] as an elected official with a degree in history, a wealth of community involvement and public service, and an author in his own right, Alderman General J.R. Gorham’s background, experience, and interests also seemed a perfect fit for this program.”

The event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served afterward.

This is the first installment in a series of monthly discussions to be held at the visitors center on topics including the history of indigenous peoples, women’s history, historic preservation, Victorian culture, North Carolina military history, art history, and the history of Kernersville.

“Our Taste of History program represents a new initiative for our organization, which is to use the Community Room of the new John & Bobbie Wolfe Visitors Center that opened in April of 2024 to provide free opportunities for the public to dive deeper into areas of interest that have been identified by our visitors,” Malliett said. “This Taste of History program series offers a no-cost and handicap-accessible learning and social experience that helps us connect with history and with each other.”
