A muralist whose art is on permanent display across the Triad is planning a major event to coincide with May’s Spring Folly in Downtown Kernersville.
Christina Parrish, the artist behind a prominent black-and-white mural on an exterior wall of Cake and All Things Yummy, is organizing a three-day mural festival beginning May 2.
“The Kernersville Mural Festival is going to be a woman-run muraling event, a live painting event,” she told Scope News founder Chris Agee in an upcoming episode of the Microscope podcast.
She noted that the festival is expected to leave the roughly two-block area with more than a dozen new murals. Donations and sponsorships help cover expenses and “pay all of the artists what they’re worth,” she added.
“Basically, I have different levels of sponsorship,” Parrish said. “So we are aiming to pay our artists $40 a square foot. So if you donate $40, you’re basically paying for one square foot of a mural. And then we have different levels — bronze through gold — for donating larger amounts of money, which that can get you like your name ‘sponsored by’ at the bottom of a mural.”

Although Parrish said she is collaborating with the town and the Chamber of Commerce, her event is essentially “piggybacking” off of the Spring Folly.
“They’re very gracious in allowing me to do that,” she said. “Because the streets are already going to be shut down and that’s not something that we have to worry about.”
The opportunity to watch these public works of art being created might attract locals to the downtown area during the event, but the long-term benefits could be exponentially greater.
“When you add murals, you can see up to like an increase in 7% foot traffic and a 12% increase in sales on whatever building that mural is on — just because people are drawn to art,” Parrish said. “But aside from that, there is like an aesthetic enjoyment to having art in your community.”
