Dozens of activities are planned across the area as part of this year’s Forsyth Creek Week, including a number of events in Kernersville.
Kernersville Stormwater Manager Wendi Hartup shared some of the annual event’s history with Scope News, explaining:
“Thirteen years ago, several of us from all the municipalities organized Creek Week to try to get people to care about water. The thought was if you know where a creek is and you have fun there, you’ll appreciate it and maybe not pollute it. The less pollution, the less cities have to spend in time and resources to clean it up.”
This year’s opportunities begin Saturday with the popular Frog Walk. At 4:00 p.m., families will meet at the Ivey M. Redmon Sports Complex, 788 Beeson Road, in the soccer field parking lot. A similar event for adults is scheduled to begin at the same location at 7:00 p.m.
Just to the west of town, the Creek Week Jamboree will take place from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday at Winston Lake Park, 2801 New Walkertown Road. Click here for all the scheduled activities and games.
The Shepherd’s Center, 636 Gralin Street, will serve as a drive-through drop-off site for expired medication from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Monday. That evening at 6:30 p.m., there will be a State of Our Water panel discussion with area experts at 1398 Carrollton Crossing Drive.
Paddison Memorial Branch Library, 248 Harmon Lane, will host a preschool storytime event at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday and a toddler storytime the following day at the same time.
Creek Week concludes on March 29 with events including a planting party at Ivey Redmon Sports Complex from 9:00 a.m. to noon.
In addition to the educational and recreational aspects of Creek Week, Hartup said there are other community benefits.
“Volunteer events also can help people appreciate nature more,” she said. “You might be less likely to litter if you help pick it up — or like several folks that regularly pick up trash or help with the planting party, you get a sense of accomplishment that you’ve made an impact.”
