“The finalists represent the very best of the best among our employees and volunteers, exemplifying and embodying the Core Values of Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools,” WS/FCS Human Resources Coordinator Angela Bostic-Phelps told Scope News. “This recognition program comes from our commitment to acknowledging the essential roles that contribute to the success of our district and help make our schools exceptional places to learn and work.”

The finalists hail from five different Kernersville schools:

  • Principal of the Year: Rita McPhatter, Caleb’s Creek Elementary
  • Assistant Principal of the Year: Kim Watkins, Glenn High School
  • Teacher of the Year: Debra Lackey, Kernersville Elementary
  • Certified Instructional Personnel of the Year: Jessica Schaefer, Cash Elementary
  • Volunteer of the Year: Cindy Miller, Kernersville Elementary and Nicole Serrin, Caleb’s Creek Elementary

Each school in the WS/FCS system votes for a winner in each of these categories. Then, the school winners complete an application for the district competition. These applications are evaluated by a category-specific committee composed of district staff members, including the previous year’s winners, and semi-finalists are chosen to be interviewed by the selection committee. After the interviews, five finalists from each category are selected.

This year’s ceremony will begin at 6:00 p.m. at Reynolds Auditorium, 301 North Hawthorne Road.
