XPO Boosts Jobs, Capacity With New Freight Facility

Transportation giant XPO has opened a major new service center in Kernersville, a move the company says will significantly expand its freight-handling capacity in the Triad and strengthen its long-term presence in North Carolina.

“Our new Kernersville service center is a key addition to XPO’s network and an important investment in North Carolina,” XPO East Division President Tim Staroba told Scope News. “The facility has more than 330 doors to load and unload freight — triple the number at our previous site in the market and more than any other XPO facility.”

At over 265,000 square feet and spanning 70 acres, the state-of-the-art facility at 1255 Highway 66 South is designed to keep up with the region’s evolving shipping demand.

“The Triad is a growing freight market with a strong manufacturing and industrial base,” Staroba said. “It positions us to move freight more efficiently across our nationwide network.”

The service center currently employs roughly 220 people across a range of roles including drivers, dockworkers, technicians, and customer service staff.

“Many employees transferred from our previous location, but we’ve also hired new team members to support our expanded operations here,” Staroba noted.

The site also includes one of XPO’s in-house driver training schools, which offers a paid path to becoming a professional driver.

Staroba explained that students “are paid while they pursue their Class-A commercial driver’s license” and, upon graduation, “they begin their careers as XPO drivers, earning the same pay as any newly hired driver.”

He said the company’s latest local investment “strengthens our long-term presence in the Triad and enhances our ability to deliver exceptional [less-than-truckload] service across the region.”

XPO operates 10 facilities and employs more than 800 people across North Carolina.
