The town took a major step toward making a long-anticipated public pool a reality, as aldermen voted unanimously on Wednesday to approve the site for the $10.8 million project.

A special pool committee considered two potential sites before landing on Etta Lea & Lawrence Pope Memorial Park, located at 300 Southern Street along the Kerner Mill Greenway.

Town manager Curtis Swisher said during the meeting:

“The advantages that it does offer is that it has access from the Greenway … and it will also be accessible off Oakhurst Street through McConnel.”

The other site under consideration was at the corner of Harmon Lane and Pineview Drive, he said.

With this week’s vote out of the way, the project moves into its final design phase.
