Board OKs Funding For Seven Local Education Grants

The Kernersville Board of Aldermen voted unanimously on Tuesday to move forward with a slightly expanded version of a previously discussed grant aimed at supporting local teachers through the Chamber of Commerce’s long-running Eating for Education program.

At the meeting this week, Town Manager Curtis Swisher presented a refined proposal following the board’s December discussion in which aldermen expressed a preference for keeping the $5,000 allocation focused directly on Kernersville classrooms. Swisher said he has since met with chamber officials to review applications that went unfunded during the most recent cycle and identified several proposals eligible for support.

The town’s recommendation included six projects across elementary, middle, and high schools, totaling $4,851.99. All of the selected proposals were among the program’s top-ranked submissions and span a range of subject areas including math, science, history, language, and exceptional children services.

Chamber President Chris Comer outlined the review process, which evaluates applications based on mission alignment, creativity, student impact, and overall value. Demand exceeded available funding this year, with more than 74 applications submitted and tens of thousands of dollars in requests left unfulfilled.

During Tuesday’s discussion, aldermen learned that a $270 classroom project narrowly missed inclusion due to the original $5,000 cap. Alderman Bill Apple suggested increasing the contribution slightly to cover that request as well, bringing the grand total to $5,122.59. The board agreed, approving the distribution of up to $5,200 in funds.

The money will be routed through the Chamber of Commerce with the stipulation that it be used for the specified projects at Kernersville-area schools. Click here for more information about this program.
