A new romantic comedy rooted firmly in Kernersville culture is heading to the stage in Winston-Salem next month.
Stained Glass Playhouse will present “Love at the Kernersville Honeybee Festival,” written and directed by local playwright Scott Icenhower, across three weekends: February 6-8, 13-15, and 20-22. Performances run Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. with Sunday matinees at 3:00 p.m.
Set against the backdrop of Kernersville’s beloved Honeybee Festival, the play centers on widower Dave Elliott and his complex path to moving on after the loss. A series of escalating moments involving a time capsule, an elaborate date proposal, and a “killer bee” provide the comic underpinning for Elliott’s entanglements with a possible love interest and a fellow widower who recently moved to town.
Icenhower said the plot developed gradually: “Some plays seem to be instantly created by an event, interaction, or even a phrase in a conversation. This was not the case. It began with observations of how people find loe after loss and a lot of drafts. Being present at the opening of the time capsule made a visceral impression on me and gave me a way to finish this story.”
Local references are woven throughout the production, from a scene involving a Kernersville board game with nods to Korner’s Folly, the Depot, and the Pinnix building to moments set outside of instantly recognizable downtown landmarks.
“We have a scene where two characters are sitting on a bench outside Fitz on Main,” Icenhower said. “We also have sound effects of loud trucks driving by for complete realism.”

The production stars Scott Goad, Myla O’Brien, Pam Barrans, Kathy Glendenning, Michael Carter, Shakara Canter, Jess Munday, and William Nicks.
Stained Glass Playhouse is located at 4401 Indiana Avenue. Click here or call 336-499-1010 for tickets and more information. Discounts are available for seniors, students, teachers, and children.
“I hope the audience will enjoy a comedy about finding love the second time around and celebrating a wonderful place to live — quirks and all,” Icenhower said.
