“Korner’s Folly has a long tradition of holding concerts for the community inside Cupid’s Park Theatre, both historically and contemporarily,” Brittany Hendley, the museum’s community engagement manager, told Scope News. “Long before modern concert halls became common in the region, this small theatre welcomed community performances and local ensembles, including early appearances by musicians who would later form the Greensboro Symphony Orchestra.”

Nowadays, the theatre hosts musical events such as a Jazz Club concert every May. Korner’s Folly collaborated with Mark A. Norman, director and conductor of the Piedmont Wind Symphony, to create a program of historically accurate music.

“The repertoire for the series was curated to reflect the kinds of music that would have been heard in American homes in the late 19th century,” said Hendley. “While we do not have a detailed program listing of each performance held inside Korner’s Folly, there is strong historical context that guides our choices. Ragtime, parlor and salon music, German wind traditions, and Moravian brass were all popular musical styles during the period when the home was built and lived in, as well as within the Piedmont region as a whole.”

The four-concert program will highlight each of these styles throughout the year:

  • March 31 | Ragtime Concert
  • May 19 | Salon Solos
  • Aug. 18 |  Bierhallen to the Bandstand
  • Dec. 8 | Moravian Holiday Brass

“This partnership underscores a shared mission between the organizations: to preserve, interpret, and celebrate cultural heritage through active engagement of artful spaces,” Hendley added. “My hope is that guests leave not only having enjoyed the performance, but also feeling a sense of connection to the history of the space and the generations who once gathered to enjoy music in much the same way.”
