The Kernersville Board of Aldermen this week approved the purchase of additional land adjacent to Ivey Redmon Sports Complex, marking the latest investment in what has become one of the town’s biggest economic drivers.
Town leaders voted to acquire roughly nine acres along Beeson Road for $200,000. The property is located alongside existing town-owned land and will expand the complex to more than 200 acres in total.
Officials say there are no immediate plans for development on the newly acquired land, but noted that the purchase adds flexibility for future expansion while preserving green space around the facilities.
Meanwhile, Ivey Redmon continues to draw significant crowds and revenue. Town staff reported that four major events at the Recreation and Event Center have generated roughly $1.2 million in economic impact, bringing in an estimated 18,000 visitors from outside the community.
Attendance figures across the broader complex are even higher. Cross-country meets held at the site last fall drew approximately 52,000 participants and spectators over the course of two months. Weekend tournaments in a variety of sports regularly attract crowds, with large-scale events like gymnastics and wrestling bringing in between 2,400 and 3,200 attendees.
According to data presented at Wednesday’s meeting, attendees have traveled from as far away as Alaska, and international competitors are expected for an upcoming USA Boxing event.
