A new academic year begins next week, and two area churches are joining forces to help ensure Kernersville teachers and students have what they need to make it a successful one.
Vicky Yates of Kernersville Moravian Church told Scope News that the church’s community outreach committee will be hosting a school supply drive on Saturday morning in coordination with Holy Cross Catholic Church.
Volunteers will be on hand to accept donations that will be distributed to area elementary and middle schools.
“Teachers are often supplying items we generally do not think of as school supplies but [are] a needed part of everyday life in the classroom,” she said.
The items most often requested by area educators include Kleenex tissues, large Band-Aids, scissors, Lysol wipes, and Ziplock bags of all sizes.
Additional items needed for the upcoming school year include 1- and 1.5-inch three-ring binders, sprial notebooks, wide-ruled composition and five-subject spiral notebooks, construction paper, two-pocket folders, Ticonderoga No. 2 pencils, pencil-top erasers, colored pencils, Crayola crayons and washable markers, pencil boxes and pouches, Elmer’s glue sticks and bottles, Expo dry-erase markers, Post-It notes, earbuds, and headphones.
Someone will be available in front of Kernersville Moravian Church’s activity building, 504 South Main Street, to accept donations between 9:00 a.m. and noon on Saturday. At other times, donations can be left in a basket located in the downstairs hallway.
