New Barbershop Emphasizes Quality Cuts, Fun Atmosphere

Hawk & Fade Barbershop opened earlier this year in the space previously occupied by Supercuts at 1060 South Main Street.

The shop offers straight razor shaves, beard trims, and haircuts in what owner John Matthews described as a laid-back atmosphere.

“We’re all about delivering top-notch barbering and grooming services that make you feel like a boss,” he said. “Whether you’re looking for a fresh cut or just some good old-fashioned barbershop banter, we’ve got you covered.”

The decor showcases a modern vibe with Husky tool cabinets against black walls adorned with vinyl albums and guitars. Hawk & Fade-branded hair care products are arranged neatly on shelves below a massive flatscreen television.

Plans are underway to bring in a turntable and let guests pick out music during their haircut. The shop is family-friendly, but clients over the age of 21 can purchase a cold beer to drink during their appointment.

“We’re really just trying to make it a fun experience and a fun place to get your hair cut, but also with really high quality for a reasonable price,” said Matthews. Staff members have an average of 10 years of experience and haircuts start at $32.

Master barber Paul Jones was the first employee at the Kernersville location. He has cut hair for more than 30 years and has been a musician for even longer. Many of the albums on the walls are his, and Matthews described his chill yet professional attitude as emblematic of the team he wanted to build.

“It went from me being in here by myself to just being extremely busy, like almost overwhelming,” Jones said of the shop’s early weeks before his coworkers were hired. “We gel together really well, and we’re adding more to the team.”

“If you can get the drama eliminated from a place like this, you can get really good people to cut hair. It’s a winning formula,” Matthews told Scope News.

He opened the first Hawk & Fade Barbershop in Charlotte last year. Once the former Supercuts location in Kernersville became available, he saw the opportunity to expand.

Matthews said he is looking forward to getting involved in local events and supporting the community.
