The Kernersville area could soon have a new hospital as Cone Health pursues plans for a new facility in southeast Forsyth County.
According to a statement from the Greensboro-based healthcare system, a certificate of need filed with state regulators describes a nearly 200,000-square-foot hospital off Cole Road, just west of Interstate 74/Highway 311 near the Northern Beltway connection.
The proposed $320 million project would be positioned to serve Kernersville and surrounding communities across the fast-growing eastern side of Winston-Salem.
“We have been a part of Kernersville since we opened MedCenter Kernersville in 2008,” said Cone Health Chief Strategy Officer Chris Cornue. “I am excited as we build on that foundation.”
According to the plans submitted to the state Division of Health Service Regulation, the mid-sized community hospital would include 56 acute care beds, 18 emergency department bays, and 10 observation beds. It would also include intensive care, imaging, and pharmaceutical services, as well as four procedure rooms built to operating-room standards.
CEO Dr. Paul Krakovitz added: “We believe in community-centered care. That means being there not only to help people stay well, but also to provide excellent, compassionate care where and when it’s needed most.”
The Northern Beltway location is designed to offer quicker access for patients coming from Kernersville and nearby communities and ease pressure on other facilities in the region.
State approval is still required before any construction can begin, but the plan represents one of the largest proposed investments in local healthcare in recent memory.
