Kernersville Marks Juneteenth With Celebration Of History, Art, And Heritage

Downtown Kernersville will once again come alive this week as the town’s fifth annual Juneteenth celebration gets underway.

The events begin Friday at 4 p.m., when attendees can take part in a free, self-guided experience at Korner’s Folly centered on the life of Clara “Aunt Dealy” Korner. Visitors will have a chance to explore personal family artifacts and contribute to an Juneteenth-inspired collaborative art project supported by grant funding from the Arts Council of Winston-Salem & Forsyth County. No registration is required for the program.

Celebrations continue at Harmon Park, where the Town of Kernersville will host a free, family-friendly gathering with live music, local vendors, food, community resource tents, and other activities, beginning at 6:30 p.m.

As in previous years, the evening will conclude with a drone show.

Here’s our coverage of the 2024 finale:

Since its inception in 2022, the local Juneteenth celebration has aimed to highlight both the historical significance of the holiday and its continued relevance today.

Alderman J.R. Gorham was a driving force behind establishing this annual event and spoke to Scope News last year about his motivation:

“July 4th is when the nation received its independence. But Juneteenth is when a people received their freedom. What we’re trying to do here in Kernersville is not only celebrate and commemorate, but also educate the whole community about the significance of that legacy and heritage.”
