Several hundred people filled Harmon Park Friday evening as Kernersville marked its fifth annual Juneteenth celebration with music, food, and a show of community support.
The event followed a special program at Korner’s Folly, with many attendees making their way down South Main Street to the park, where local organizations set up tents and a line of food trucks served a steady stream of patrons.
Live music anchored the evening, including a worship performance by Alicia Joy Cone. The celebration concluded with a fireworks display and drone show.

For many locals in attendance, the event offered a welcome experience close to home. One Kernersville resident was pleasantly surprised by the strong turnout and appreciated having a local option to commemorate the holiday.
“I think it’s nice that you don’t have to travel to the bigger cities,” she said, adding that it was “nice to see the community come together.”
She added that she received a commemorative T-shirt as one of the first attendees to arrive and noted the opportunity to meet local leaders, including Mayor Dawn Morgan.

The event also drew visitors from outside Kernersville. One Winston-Salem resident said he chose to attend Friday’s celebration in order to mark Juneteenth on the holiday itself, since his hometown’s event was scheduled for the following day.
He cited the relaxed, welcoming atmosphere and strong musical lineup as highlights of the evening, confirming along with many others that he planned to stay for the drone show.
