The Kernersville Board of Aldermen this week finalized plans for the town’s new Comprehensive Plan. For more on this long-range vision document intended to guide development, transportation, infrastructure, and land-use decisions, click here for our more in-depth report. 

“This is not a regulatory document,” consultant Scott Goldstein told the board on Wednesday. “It’s a statement of Kernesville’s values, a vision for the future … and a guide for all of you as decision-makers in future projects.”

Community Development Director Catherine Garner noted that feedback from the community was consistent throughout the process. Residents repeatedly expressed a desire to preserve Kernersville’s small-town identity while accommodating growth, improving walkability, investing in infrastructure, and supporting local business, she said. 

Concerns about traffic and overdevelopment also surfaced during multiple rounds of public engagement.

Goldstein said the plan is intended to build on what the town is already doing well.

“The key elements are really thoughtful, carefully managed growth that honors the town’s history and preserves that small-town charm while still moving forward,” he said. 

Throughout the presentation, officials stressed that the document should be viewed as a guiding vision rather than a binding course of action. 

After a public comment session and discussion by the board, the plan was unanimously approved.
