Ceremony To Honor Veterans Buried At Historic St. Paul’s Cemetery

A wreath-laying ceremony this weekend will recognize local servicemembers interred at St. Paul’s AME Cemetery.

The historic site, located behind the Stafford House at 711 S. Main St., served as the burial ground for virtually the entire Black population of the Kernersville community through the post-Civil War period.

Saturday’s ceremony is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. and is being coordinated by the Joseph Kerner Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Kernersville Historic Preservation Society.

Of the six known veterans buried there, two served during World War I and four served during World War II. Wreaths will be placed at each of their gravesites, in addition to one wreath placed in recognition of unknown veterans who may be buried at the cemetery.

Veterans’ graves are marked with American flags and the cemetery is open to visitors year round.

The public is invited to this weekend’s observance, which organizers say is an opportunity to recognize not only the military service of six local veterans but also the history of a cemetery that holds an important place in this community’s heritage.
