Kernersville Foundation Names Next Leader, Outlines 2027 Plans

A longtime community leader is set to take over as the Kernersville Foundation’s next executive director effective Jan. 1.

Kevin Bugg will succeed Bruce Boyer, who has led the foundation since March 2024 and will remain on staff during a period of transition.

Bugg has been a State Farm agent for more than 40 years and his civic involvement spans government, nonprofit leadership, and community development.

He previously served on the Kernersville Board of Aldermen, including as mayor pro tem, and helped establish a hospital in the community as a member of the Kernersville Medical Center Advisory Board.

Bugg has been a member of the foundation’s board since 2000 and currently serves as one of its two vice chairs and grant award committee chair. The 1985 graduate of Radford University has received several local honors, including the Kernersville Chamber of Commerce’s Small Business Person of the Year, Citizen of the Year, and Arnold G. King Community Distinguished Service Award.

His new appointment comes as the foundation prepares to expand its reach through additional funding and a new fundraising initiative.

Duane Long, chair of the foundation’s board, called Bugg “an excellent choice” for the role, citing his “career built on service, steady leadership, and a longstanding commitment to Kernersville.”

The foundation is currently planning its inaugural community-wide Day of Giving, scheduled for April 14. The event is designed to encourage residents to support local nonprofits, and Bugg brings to the role direct experience with a similar initiative in another community.

Boyer, the former president and CEO of the Kernersville Chamber of Commerce, came out of retirement to lead the foundation, informally committing to serving for three years. His planned departure comes after fulfilling that commitment and helping the organization prepare for its next phase.

“All the elements are in place for 2027 to be the most productive year in the history of the foundation,” said Long. “Everything lined up perfectly to have more staff time, financial resources, and Kevin Bugg’s skills in financial services, so the foundation can have a greater impact on the community.”

Boyer said his time with the organization has been focused on setting the course for future growth.

“It has been my honor to work with the nonprofit community these past three years,” he said. “My role has been to prepare the Kernersville Foundation for the next step. It is going to be exciting to see how much the foundation grows in these next few years.”
