Schools Will Close Friday For Educator’s Day of Action

The Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Board of Education called a special meeting earlier this week, determining that many schools would not have enough staff to safely operate due to the large number of employees expected to travel to Raleigh on Friday for the “Kids Over Corporations” rally.

The district has already exhausted all banked days, meaning the school calendar will extend to May 27 to make up for Friday’s closure.

The North Carolina Association of Educators is organizing the rally at Halifax Mall in Raleigh on Friday, calling for “increased funding for public schools, accountability for voucher spending, and an end to policies prioritizing tax cuts over students,” according to its website.

The Forsyth County Association of Educators is also organizing charter buses to take educators, parents, and community allies to Raleigh.

As of the special meeting, the board reported 1,253 planned absences (about 16.5% of staff) with 25 schools unable to safely operate.

Board members also noted 35 field trips are scheduled for that day, student testing calendars could be affected, and some high school graduations are set to begin May 27, now the district’s final day of school.
