KFRD Hosting Free Car Check Event Ahead Of Holiday Travel

As Memorial Day weekend approaches and families prepare to hit the road, the Kernersville Fire Rescue Department is offering a free and simple way to keep young passengers safer.

The department, in partnership with Safe Kids Northwest Piedmont, will host a free car seat check event on Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 12 noon in the Gabe’s parking lot, 830 South Main Street. The event is open to the public and no appointment is required.

Certified child passenger safety technicians will be on site to inspect car seats, ensuring they are properly installed and answering any questions about the process.

“Getting your car seat inspected is important to help ensure children are riding as safely as possible every time they get in a vehicle,” said Chris Kauffman, assistant fire marshal and KFRD fire life safety educator.

While some installation errors can be serious, he told Scope News that the majority are fairly routine, though still important to correct.

“Most of the issues we find are adjustment errors, such as the seat not being properly fitted for the child’s age, height, and weight,” Kauffman added.

A properly installed and correctly used car seat has been shown to significantly reduce the risk of serious injury in a crash, which is why organizers are encouraging families to take advantage of this service — particularly during a busy travel weekend.
