A darkly comedic musical will be coming to town this weekend as Kernersville Little Theatre wraps up its current season with a two-week run of “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.”
Performances are scheduled for Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 2:00 p.m. at James Fitzpatrick Auditorium, 512 West Mountain Street.
For director Ryan Hendricks, the decision to accept the role was an easy one.
“‘Sweeney Todd’ has always been one of my all-time favorite shows, and when given the opportunity to direct such a massive show, I jumped at the chance,” he told Scope News. “This show has quite the dark and twisted storyline, while also having more lighthearted, humorous tones.”
It’s that balance, along with a “fully immersive experience,” that Hendricks says will keep audiences engaged from beginning to end.
But as the finished product plays out under the stage lights, much of the work is happening out of view.
“Behind every seamless performances is a tremendous amount of coordination between the backstage crew, dressers, lighting and spotlight operators, sound technicians, and myself,” said Lee Knapp, the production’s stage manager.
Knapp’s philosophy in preparing for opening night: “When everyone understands their role and works together toward a common goal, the audience gets to enjoy what appears to be a flawless production.”
Final preparations are underway this week to ensure all the moving pieces are fitting together smoothly. Click here for tickets.
