Classic Car Cruise-In Returns To Downtown This Weekend

The Old Salem Chapter of the Antique Automobile Club of America will once again roll into Downtown Kernersville this weekend as its monthly classic car cruise-in returns for the summer.

As we reported earlier this year, the Kernersville Board of Aldermen heard concerns from some residents about the event’s impact on downtown traffic and nearby businesses. Town leaders ultimately signed off on the existing plan, which calls for Main Street to close from Railroad to Harmon streets at 3 p.m. on the second Saturday of each month from June through October.

Mountain Street will remain open, with the cruise-in itself running from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Club representative Crystal Tanner spoke in support of the event during a February board meeting, calling it “another event that has the potential to draw people to Kernersville who don’t know what we can offer.”

Tanner also pointed to the club’s charitable impact, noting more than $17,000 in donations in recent years.

Scope News spoke with a local business owner, who said a petition circulated among downtown merchants was meant only to “make some additional suggestions about shutting down the road and the placement of cars,” adding that “no one’s ever been against it.”
