As an earlier-than-usual start to the school year rapidly approaches, several Kernersville organizations are stepping up with back-to-school drives and events aimed at helping local teachers and families start off strong.

Here’s a rundown of several current and upcoming opportunities:

YMCA Bright Beginnings

The Kernersville Family YMCA’s Bright Beginnings program returns as one of the area’s most comprehensive back-to-school initiatives, providing clothing, shoes, backpacks, and various supplies to local students.

There are three ways to participate:

• Volunteer as a “shopping buddy” on Aug. 1 from 7:00 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. 
• Donate new school supplies at the YMCA through Sunday
• Sponsor a child for $180 to fully outfit one student for the school year

Organizers hope to raise $30,000 to support 150 local children referred to the program through area elementary schools. More information available here. 

Eating for Education

One of the communities easiest ways to support local classrooms is back with two more opportunities this summer.

The Kernersville Chamber of Commerce’s Eating for Education program invites residents to dine at more than a dozen participating residents on the second Wednesday of August and September, with up to 10% of proceeds going toward teacher classroom grants.

Back to School Community Bash

A community event hosted by Sunshine Creations Co. and aimed at supporting students, teachers, and homeschool families is set for Aug. 1 from 10:00 to 2:00 p.m. at VFW Post 5352, 618 Edgewood Street. 

Organizers are planning family-friendly activities including bounce houses, vendors, food trucks, and appearances from local groups including the Greensboro Gargoyles.

A donation drive will also be underway to collect backpacks, school supplies, and classroom materials. Donations can be dropped off at the event or ahead of time at participating locations around town.

Kernersville Police Department Supply Drive

A school supply drive hosted by the Kernersville Police Department will be held at Target, 1090 S. Main St., on Thursday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Donations accepted include backpacks and classroom essentials such as notebooks, pens, pencils, crayons, markers, glue sticks, and folders. 

Next Step Ministries Supply Drive

Back with its fourth annual supply drive benefiting students at Kernersville Elementary School, Next Step Ministries will be accepting donations through Friday.

New, unopened school supplies can be donated at Next Step Ministries Thrift Store, Sunlight Church, or Next Step Ministries Administrative Office.
