Savage Roasters Coffee owner Joshua Pratt describes philanthropy as more than just writing checks.

Through Coffee for a Cause, the 501(c)(3) organization connected to the downtown coffee shop, Pratt and his wife, Kim, have helped raise more than $250,000 for various causes over the past five years. Much of that work has centered around organizations in the Kernersville area with the goal of keeping as much of the money as possible in the community.

But in a recent interview with Scope News, he explained that one upcoming event has taken on a life of its own.

All Mounds Matter, an annual breast cancer walk/run that began five years ago, raised about $50,000 in 2025 with roughly 650 people registered. Pratt said the event quickly became more than just a fundraiser.

“I think people kind of get tied up on the 5K,” he said. “Half the people walk, and a lot of people are out there supporting other people.”

Set for October 4 this year, the event has also become a gathering place for survivors and their families.

“They consider this their survival party,” Pratt explained. “So if I wanted to stop, I couldn’t. It’s not about me.”

While the Pratts prioritized charitable efforts in the past, Coffee for a Cause has given them an opportunity to provide greater transparency for donors and sponsors.

“I look at the numbers and I know people get excited about it,” Pratt said. “I just think it’s never enough. There’s always a need.”
