A local nonprofit organization is receiving a boost as it works to recover from significant flood damage to one of its facilities.
The Kernersville Foundation has announced a $5,000 matching grant to support repairs at the Next Step Ministries Safe House. Initial estimates pegged the total repair costs at around $30,000.

Next Step Ministries Executive Director Alexandria Hicks told Scope News that a plumbing failure in an upstairs restroom caused extensive flooding throughout the lower level of the safe house. The damage impacted flooring, walls, ceilings, and essential household items.
The organization is currently working with contractors to complete restoration efforts as quickly as possible. While an exact reopening date has not been set, the current goal is to have the safe house back in operation by mid-July.
In the meantime, Hicks noted that key services for those in need have not been interrupted.
“We continue to provide crisis intervention, advocacy, case management, safety planning, court support, resource navigation, and referrals,” she said. “We have also worked to secure alternate housing options for individuals and families who need safe placement … in the way of emergency hotel stays and coordination with partnering agencies that provide similar residential services.”
Donations made via this link and designated for “Safe House Recovery” will qualify for the matching grant funds.
